Recap for those who missed it!

Some say there's nothing that likes to rest more than a Mexican Dog, uno perro.

While our Dogs are resting, perro style, I thought I'd post one more time to explain what happened in the last hours of the race, because there was a lot going on and everyone's sat phones got shuffled.

Rich had a problem with the bike, and pulled into Honda Pit 22, 50 miles from the finish. He had no phone, so he sent three messages with SPOT. OK - Help - Help. John Brickley and David Deveau were very close to the turn to Pit 22, so they went up there, David taking off on a bike once they got close to Rich, and the going got rough. Once he got there, we had a satphone on the site, and could communicate. The time from Rich signalling help, until David got there was about an hour!

Eventually Brickley made it to the pit, too. Meanwhile two other chase trucks were staging at the next road access to the course past this point. Froman was in this group, and they were in touch via phone, too.

Once David got to Rich with the satphone, they were all over the organization and the repair. Brickley eventually got his Dodge Truck in there with more parts, and the three of them eventually got the 408 bike working, and David and Rich rode together to the finish line. Brickley drove back out in the Dodge and met them in Cabo.

So now there's nothing for a Dirt Dog to do but rest. Manyana, dude.

Goodnight, Good Luck & time for a Brave Bull!

Rich & Dave Heading to the Finish

Tarred & Feathered

Tarred & Feathered

I sure hope that nobody on the DirtDog Team are superstitious, or think that I jinxed the effort, as the post I made with the picture titled ..."The End......." was NOT what I was referring to although that location was very close to the end of the HONDA motor...

Yours was a RIDE to be proud of !

I'm glad that I was able to participate in your effort. Please enjoy your Re-coup in Cabo! Have a Brave Bull or 2 for me! Looking forward to some great stories at the Post Race Party! Tim Kelly

They are going to ride it out!

Dave and Rich plan to turn the blown bike over to Honda, who made it in the first place!

Then they are going to ride the last 50 miles of the course to Cabo.

They'll call you with details if necessary.

I'm going off line, Tim and Steve can continue to monitor.

Location of Trouble Call

Engine Blew 50 miles from finish line

3:46PM Just spoke with Rich.

He is in Honda Pit 22 with a blown engine.

David Deveau did make it in to him with a satphone, so they are arranging their own rescue. They have the phone ending in 51 - send them a text message at iridium.com

scott

Honda Pit 22

3:35PM
This is the Roadmap around Honda Pit 22, where we think Rich has been stopped for almost one hour. David Deveau will be there real soon, after driving Chase #4 to Checkpoint 10 and going in on a bike.

Dave Froman has staged at the next road South in Chase #3

Trouble Call

We got a trouble call, actually two of them from SPOT.

Rich is located at 23.3602 -110.0864
El Refugio, Mexico 11/14/07 2:33 PM RM1246
Which is probably at Honda Pit 22

David Deveau has called to answer the trouble call and is driving to Checkpoint 10, where he will get on a bike and find Rich.

SPOT is still tracking, but has not moved from 10:33-11:07

scott

The END in sight !!! Yeah Baby !!!

Rich is at Checkpoint 10

2:33PM RM1246
But slow all of a sudden...
Maybe a checkpoint delay, but this last 18 minutes -- only 3 miles.

1:55 Update

RM1229 1:55PM Rich just went past the Chase Trucks, where Dave Froman and the crew were waiting at RM1220.

As luck would have it, Race Officials held up a STOP (ALTO) sign and Rich had to stop right in front of the Dirt Dog Chase Trucks. He burst into song: "Stop in the Name of Love". We think he's having fun.

Still waiting

11:45 Still waiting... should be any time now.

Waiting on a Brother

11:15 Rich still by the side of the road, looking for a perfectly good motorcycle he gave away to come back to him. Insanity?

His own brother Dave is the one bringing the bike back and I'm wondering if they are going to fight over it when he finally gets there. They are brothers, after all.

But I'm thinking not. Dave had a hard section to ride and my guess is he's ready for some Hornitos. So yeah, he'll give the bike away.

SPOT is back on...

24.0759 -111.0057 El Conejo, Mexico 11/14/07 10:46 AM

This is Rich, waiting for his brother at RM1145. Dave should be there within the hour.

7:11AM Race Update from http://www.dirtnewz.com/events-07/baja1000/index.shtml

Unofficially second across the line is Juan Jose Gonzales from Los Cabos riding a 6 year old colt with a rooster for a co-driver. His stub can was empty.

Last Spot sighting

The last SPOT sighting was at 6:43AM at RM918. This is probably near where they did the rider change, which was planned at RM920.

If D Deveau was at RM990 at 7:41AM, he had 170 miles to go to get to the next Rider Change at RM1160. At 45 mph average, this would take 3:45, and would mean he would get there about 11:30AM

Google Earth

The next time, we strap a SPOT on every guy down there!

Call from Froman

At 8:30 I got a call from Dave Froman, with a whole lotta Dogs. He is in Rich's Truck with Gary Rossi and I think Colin and Rich are in the other truck. They are at RM990.

They were not able to make the SPOT transfer, so Rich still has the SPOT, which he'll carry to the finish line. They are now going to RM1160 for the last rider change.

scott

First Finisher

At 7:41 AM, the number 1x Team Honda CRF450X (Robby Bell, Kendall Norman, Steve Hengeveld, Johnny Campbell) crossed the finish line, 25 hours, 11 minutes.

I estimate Dave Deveau to be near Race Mile 990 at this time.

Your Morning Paper

First, the good news: The rider change at Loreto (Race Mile 917, 26.0257 -111.3727) was completed at about 6:50 AM. Dave Deveau took the XR650R from Rich for his run to Race Mile 990 for more fuel. The lights should be removed at that point.

The bad news is: the SPOT device failed to make the rider change. We will have no updates until Rich begins the last leg at RM 1160.

During the night, satellite phone communication problems resulted in the inability to send text messages to the chase trucks after 2:47 AM. Tim's stead-fast dedication and numerous phone calls produced the necessary work-arounds that enabled the restoration of data flow by 5:53 AM.

The next two hours of the course looks like this:

- Steve

Was I a sinner?

Was I a sinner in a past life... perhaps? In any event as I joined the late shift I had a few moments of encouragement and inspiration from Steve... to get the job done and to follow those succinct procedures that by now were so well oiled by him... So why weren't the Sat phones working all of a sudden? Phone the Tech departments ~ a lovely task ... although I got somebody that was more interested in account numbers than saving someone's life... it went well enough finally... and the SPOT device resumed its delightful functionality! With the IRISH bent on precision rather than the GERMAN finesse I soldiered ahead with every good intention... (How much does this job pay?) as I remember in the planning stages I volunteered to drive THIS pace/chase vehicle ... as seen in some of the test runs earlier in the year...

Colin Dave & Rich routes

Midnight (supplemental)

12:18 PM - Buster on Chase Truck One just called from Honda Pit #12. Dave Froman just left on his section and is headed toward San Ignacio and points further south.

Colin's reduced pace was due to a failed rear tire just as he came onto the highway at Vizcaino and he made it to the pit on a rim and a prayer. Buster reports that the team changed wheels, filled 'er up, replaced riders and the race is on.

At this time, I'll turn over the reporting to Tim. I'll be back for a couple of hours around 5 AM.

- Steve

Midnight

SPOT hasn't sent a signal for 32 minutes, last was 7 miles up the highway from the Honda pits at Race Mile 681.

Oops, just in! Got a signal at 12:02, about Race Mile 682, so Froman may have just left. There was a tire change scheduled for this stop.
More, shortly, after I get another track, then I'll be turning over to your late night host, Tim.

Let's have a pool...

4:00PM OK we have not had SPOT data in about 5 hours. Who wants to make a prediction of when it will happen?

My guess RM400 at 4:40PM

Unless Callagy just stopped in .... where did SPOT say he was? "El Sauzalito"? I'm not making this up... naw, he couldn't have. But here at Tracker central, it doesn't sound too bad.

SPOT Directions

Directions to put SPOT in tracking mode...

To turn SPOT on, press the ON/OFF button. You must then wait an additional 2 seconds before activating tracking mode. When power is on, the indicator light will blink once every 3 seconds. To turn SPOT off, press and hold the ON/OFF button for 3 seconds.

Hold down OK for 5 sec to activate Tracking mode. The blinking light will stop blinking momentarily, and then go back to blinking. Every 10 minutes the light will be steady as it communicates with the satellite. To exit Tracking mode, press and hold OK until the light turns red briefly, or turn the unit off.

To complicate things:

From: "Customer Care Customer Care"
To: "Scott Gordon"
Cc: , ,
Subject: Re: Tracking mode

Hi,
Here's a breakdown of the buttons and lights:
Powered on, the ON/OFF light blinks every 3 seconds.
During the Check/OK cycle, that light also blinks every three seconds in unison with the power light for 20 minutes. You just press the button for an instant.
When you hold down the Check/OK button to put the unit in tracking mode it stays solid green while initiating the tracking mode and then after about 5 seconds begins blinking every 3 seconds in unison with the power light. Just pressing the button for a moment will not put it in tracking.
If the lights blink out of unison, you do not have a GPS fix and messages will be transmitted without lat/long.
AFTER either the Check/OK cycle or the tracking cycles have been initiated there is no visible difference except that Check/OK will complete after 20 minutes and tracking will go for 24 hours.

Race overview

We have a little while with no real info, since the SPOT got turned off.

So let's do a Race Summary for armchair Dirt Dogs: Apart from a little bit of up and down elevation changes and a little bit of sailing-style-going-the-wrong-way, this race is a "Changes in Latitude" race, namely from about 31.50N to 22:53N, nine degrees in just two days. Even a no-navigator can follow the race and team progress, by just knowing that 22:53 is the finish.

Every position report we include has two numbers. Ignore the one that's negative and focus on the positive one. It's going to go down and down, and eventually hit 22:53. Check it out.

The Dirt Dogs are online

2:30PM On the phone with John Brickley and Gary Rossi in Loreto... Brickley reports 1200 miles on his Dodge Truck just chasing the pre-runs!

Brad is in place

1:40PM Colin just called; Brad and the wheels and lights have been dropped at Pit 7, which is at RM 368. Spot is off at this time. This will be corrected soon.

Dave is well on his way here now !

Just heard from Rich

I just heard from Rich at 10:40AM. Haven't heard from the SPOT since 11:06 - about 40 minutes, but Froman is in the Mountains now.

Rich hasn't been getting the satphone texts via email since RM100.

I just sent a batch of emails to the satphones using the Iridium web site. We may have to do this as time goes on. Rich called back immediately to say his went through.

Day before the Race!

I've spoken to Callagy, Froman and Deveau today on the phone.

All are on board with the following:

1. More info is better. Chase trucks to be updated at least once per hour, friends and family once every two hours.

2. The "I'm OK" button will be used occasionally, esp at checkpoints and rider changes.

3. For SPOT, Lithium batteries are a must and Froman knows this.

4. We did a test of the "trouble" button today, and it went well.

5. In the morning, pre-start, Froman will start the SPOT device, this will be 4:30AM or so. SPOT will log in on the website. At this time all chase trucks should receive the message: Navigation team has seen SPOT initialize pre start - Everything is good! Froman and all others will then know the SPOT is working.

6. The team is nervous, tired and a little worried. They underestimated the amount of time it would take to pre-run the course. They are resting and they will be ready to race! Froman did not stack the bike during pre-run!

Navigation Team Procedure

Your navigation team is doing the following job... besides coordinating among ourselves so there is complete coverage of the race.

1. We'll Monitor the SPOT device for updates in rider position, and log these changes, which come every 10-20 minutes.

2. We'll determine RM (Race Mile) Position for each update.

3. As the riders pass certain milestones determined by Rich (Basically every 50 miles, a little more often before the rider changes at RM 204-360-700-920-1160), we will send a text message to the "Chase Truck List". This includes all riders and trucks. The message has to be short, will say "TIME RM POS SPEED COMMENT" like this:
8:34AM RM 187 30.8766 -115.8205 45MPH CALLAGY

4. A little less often, the same message will be sent out to all the support people on our email list. (To be added to either list, write a comment to this blog, with your email or text message instructions, Verizon people are 7079991234@vtext.com for instance.)

5. We'll post the information to this blog, plus links to the Google Map, and Google Earth file for each update. Sometimes the information will be in the comment field so check the blog carefully.

6. We'll also log all the positions we receive with all the info above, so that at the end of the race, we'll have a complete record of it.

Any other requests?

Navigator Team Schedule

Your friendly neighborhood navigation and communication team is Scott Steve and Tim.

We're pretty excited to be here. The race starts Tuesday at o dark thirty. and we're going to cover it like this: (all times are California, PST)

Tuesday 8:30-> Noon Scott
Tuesday Noon-> 6PM Tim
Tuesday 6PM -> Midnight Steve
Wednesday Midnight->5AM Tim
Wednesday 5AM-> 8:30AM Steve
Wednesday 8:30AM->5PM Scott

These times are all approximate, we may change them somewhat, and there is a good chance that 2 or all three of us may be watching at any particular time.

Rider Assignments

This is unofficial, subject to change, yada yada, but it's the plan as I understand it:

700 Froman
820 R Deveau
920 D Deveau
1160 R Deaveau

Froman was out late

Dave Froman did make it back to Ensenada last night, and the SPOT worked really well. SPOT tries to send an updated position every ten minutes, but not all of them get through. Yesterday we got 46 reports in about 12.5 hours.

Here's the Google Map of his complete loop:
Froman Saturday Loop Map

If you want to see it on Google Earth, here's the file:

Froman was out from 9:10AM until 9:40PM.
His last position was 11/10/2007 09:40:13PM PST 31.7754 -116.611

His final position report on the race course was near RM190 30.8766 -115.8205
at 5:10PM, then it took 4.5 hours to get back to Ensenada.

You can cut and paste any of these Lat Lon Pairs of numbers into Google Earth.

and if you want the google Earth file go to:
Froman Saturday on Earth

SPOT recorded his trip from 9:10AM until 5:39PM

His last position was 30.9005 -115.8638 El Carrecitio at 5:39 PST
I'm going to report all positions at California Time PST

Things are heating up...

Pre-running is going on in earnest today. I spoke with Dave Froman today for a while before he took off. He's the first rider, so he has the GPS SPOT device with him that all riders will carry with them. It's like the Dirt Dog Baton, except that's also the Bike's job!

Froman will carry the SPOT with him as he preruns today. I'll blog and text as another practice. He's going to carry the SPOT in a few different places, and even test the "help" function (but not the "Emergency send helicopter" function.

It's a rainy day up here in Northern California, but still nice in Baja. Check the weather link on this blog (see link box on the right) to see real time Cabo weather.
