To turn SPOT on, press the ON/OFF button. You must then wait an additional 2 seconds before activating tracking mode. When power is on, the indicator light will blink once every 3 seconds. To turn SPOT off, press and hold the ON/OFF button for 3 seconds.
Hold down OK for 5 sec to activate Tracking mode. The blinking light will stop blinking momentarily, and then go back to blinking. Every 10 minutes the light will be steady as it communicates with the satellite. To exit Tracking mode, press and hold OK until the light turns red briefly, or turn the unit off.

Here's a breakdown of the buttons and lights:
Powered on, the ON/OFF light blinks every 3 seconds.
During the Check/OK cycle, that light also blinks every three seconds in unison with the power light for 20 minutes. You just press the button for an instant.
When you hold down the Check/OK button to put the unit in tracking mode it stays solid green while initiating the tracking mode and then after about 5 seconds begins blinking every 3 seconds in unison with the power light. Just pressing the button for a moment will not put it in tracking.
If the lights blink out of unison, you do not have a GPS fix and messages will be transmitted without lat/long.
AFTER either the Check/OK cycle or the tracking cycles have been initiated there is no visible difference except that Check/OK will complete after 20 minutes and tracking will go for 24 hours.
